DOLWIN6 HVDC

“Facilitating the energy transition.”

DOLWIN6 HVDC

2018

  • Sizing, validation, optimization and certification of the anti-cavitation protection of the Dolwin Kappa offshore substation located in the vicinity of the Dolwin Beta platform. The objective of the project was to connect the onshore power grid with several offshore wind farms located in the German sector of the North Sea.

WHAT HAS MADE THIS PROJECT UNIQUE?

    • Supporting evidence-based decision making and innovation for contribution to the SDGs.
    • Design of multidisciplinary, integrated and unique solutions to address the complexity of socio-ecological systems associated with water and ensure their resilience.
    • Capacity building and knowledge transfer to new generations of professionals (research and management personnel) to promote the progress of science and society.

HOW HAS IT ALIGNED WITH OUR MISSION AND VISION?

    • Boosting innovation to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs, especially SDG7, while contributing to the vision of positioning IHCantabria as a world reference center.

WHAT LESSONS HAVE BEEN LEARNED?

    • Fluid communication with all stakeholders involved in the project.
    • High understanding of the objectives and complexity of the problem that facilitated the identification of the best solution for the project.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT?

    • Development of innovative methodologies for the experimental validation of anti-scour solutions for the protection of jacket structures.
    • Generation of a deeper knowledge (applicable in the short and medium term) on the effects associated with the phenomenon of scour in fixed jacket foundations.
    • Certification of the designed and dimensioned anti-socavation protection during the experimental tests.
    • Successful application in the foundation of the DOLWIN KAPPA substation by DRAGADOS OFFSHORE.

WHY HAS IT BEEN SUCH A SUCCESS?

    • Highly qualified multidisciplinary team, capable of providing technical support for problems of great singularity for offshore engineering.
    • IHCantabria’s capacity for the design and development of innovative solutions in the field of offshore engineering.
    • Ability to extrapolate knowledge acquired in other fields such as maritime engineering, to an application lacking empirical information and design standards.
