IHDATA

“Generating the information needed to develop climate services.”

IHDATA

2013 – 2022

IHData is a database capable of providing accurate climatological statistics on wind, waves and sea level for any European country, and on wave conditions for any region of the world. These data can be considered to have an accuracy similar to that of buoy and sensor data. IHData comprises the following databases:

    • GOW: open water waves, global and regional ocean scale.
    • DOW: waves on the coast with high spatial resolution.
    • SeaWind: sea winds, regional scale.
    • SeaWind-HR: coastal marine winds with high spatial resolution.
    • GOS: meteorological tide (storm surge, sea level component due to atmospheric forcings).
    • GOT: astronomical tide.

CONTEXT

    • REGION, COUNTRY: Worldwide
    • CLIENT: Miscellaneous / Consulting / Oil & gas / Renewable / Construction
    • SOURCE OF FINANCING: Public and private
    • SCOPE: National / European / International

WHAT HAS MADE THIS PROJECT UNIQUE?

    • Supporting evidence-based decision making and innovation for contribution to the SDGs.
    • Capacity building and knowledge transfer to new generations of professionals (research and management personnel) to promote the progress of science and society.
    • Cooperation, alliances and partnerships for sustainability, as an interface between academic and business, local and global, public and private agents.

HOW HAS IT ALIGNED WITH OUR MISSION AND VISION?

    • IHData promotes scientific excellence and its transfer with a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach.

WHAT LESSONS HAVE BEEN LEARNED?

    • Client needs change over time, depending on the business sector (coastal engineering, offshore wind energy, etc.), and therefore IHCantabria must continue to update and adapt to emerging circumstances and trends.
    • The volume of data and the needs of development, maintenance and support, impose the dedication of at least one person from IHCantabria exclusively to work in IHData.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT?

    • Accumulated billing to external user entities: €256,000 through 2021. It currently has bids already approved for close to €200,000 in 2022.
    • Fundamental for the development of each and every one of the projects involving climate analysis internally in IHCantabria, where the value contribution is difficult to estimate.

WHY HAS IT BEEN SUCH A SUCCESS?

    • More than 50% of the projects under development in IHCantabria make use of IHData capabilities. To date, IHData has a total of 46 external customers.
